THE UNGRATEFUL CHRISTIAN

Luke 17:11-19 (NIV)

11 Now, on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.

12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[a] met him. They stood at a distance

13 and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"

14 When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.

16 He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

17 Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?

18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?"

19 Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."

Ingratitude blind people's minds to the faithfulness and goodness of God in our lives. From the above passage, ten people were healed, and ONLY one remembered to return the glory to God. Luke 17:15-16.

God designed man to be humble, full of morals and gratitude. When we are not in alignment with this design, we err.

As believers, it is expected of us to live a grateful life. Our life of gratitude is without regard to the ongoing around us. Showing gratitude is a direct order of God to us.

The Word of God emphasized why believers should imbibe gratitude and what the lack of it meant to their lives.

Ingratitude is pride. Ingratitude is a sin of intense repercussions.

In Romans 1:21 – 28, God clearly defined ingratitude as foolishness. When a man is being wise in his own eyes, he becomes full of his vain imaginations and begins to see less and less reasons to be grateful for anything.

In verses 23 and 25, the case of not glorifying God was explained as a case of man changing the glory of God to that of man, such that it is full of uncleanness.

Ingratitude is trading God's truth for a lie. It is denying the greatness of God and attributing it to the wonders of man's imaginations and exploits by indirectly worshipping the one, the things God created, and paying less attention to God the Almighty Himself.

A man who refuses to show gratitude forgets God and abandons his precepts. Because gratitude is a show of faith, ingratitude becomes a display of unbelief in the marvelous works of God.

A Christian can know God and not glorify Him as God. The sin of ingratitude is not a sin that is popular amongst unbelievers. It is most predominant among believers who profess faith in Him.

When a man is right in his own eyes and trusts in his ability and knowledge, he naturally becomes less submissive. Hence, he becomes more ungrateful.

Jeremiah 10:14 - Every man is senseless and devoid of knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols. For his molten images are a fraud, and there is no breath in them. (BSB).

The above passage shows that every man is a brute in his knowledge. In his thinking, there is no reason or intelligence. An ungrateful man will be left confused.

Ingratitude implies:

- no acknowledgment,

- no submission,

- trust in one's way,

- overconfidence in man's ideas,

- pride

Ingratitude could be one sure way a Christian or society meets its downfall. The reason is that God takes gratefulness and ungratefulness in high esteem. As long as a Christian or society remains thankful even to the least of things, they retain a sense of acknowledgment of His presence.

Gratitude to God is an exhibition of faith in Him while being ungrateful is being unresponsive to His existence.

When we fail to express gratitude, we grow hard-hearted and proud. We take God for granted and undervalue all he has delivered to us. Ungratefulness is the beginning of a believer's fall from grace.

2 Timothy 3:2 gives a picture of the last days and what people will be like. One of the attitudes that stand out is ingratitude. Men shall be unthankful.

When a man begins to self-rule in utmost pride, the hearts of men start to tilt toward trusting in themselves. Therefore, there will be no reason to dish out praises anymore.

We become convinced of our efforts and see every little thing that comes to us as a just reward for our efforts. We begin to ascribe what we receive from God as the fruits of our hard labour.

Ingratitude opens a man up to a world of evil without limits. When we begin to see the source of our being, the source of our gifts as an external result, we plunge deeper into a reprobate world.

The end of this arrogance, according to Romans 1:24, is God leaving us to our unprincipled minds, and when a man is left to his foolish mind, he is abandoned by God.

By showing gratitude, we protect our souls and spirits against idolatry and arrogance.
