STANDING FIRM IN PRAYER

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to teach them that they should always pray and never become discouraged– Luke 18:1 (AMP)

God is always at work in our lives; redeeming, saving, delivering, and blessing. He is at work for the short and long term. He has our best interests at heart.

The one way to plug into everything God has to offer is in the place of prayer.

When we pray, we expect answers. Answers sometimes come slower than expected. It is natural for us to anticipate quick responses, especially considering to whom we offer our prayers to.

Waiting is a virtue that works with God. Ability to persist and not run when answers are slow in coming. When we keep our faith locked in there, when we do not play the impatient dog game, being able to keep knocking firmly, time and again, on Heaven’s door is a big spiritual trait.

Jesus, our perfect example, was persistent in prayer.

He practiced it and taught it too. He stood firm in persistent prayer. His perseverance and continuance showed how keen he is in proving to stay in prayer even when the answers are not forthcoming.

He spent nights in prayer. Sometimes after ministering to multitudes, he would still look for a solitary place to offer prayers. He prayed so intensely that His sweat drops of blood while praying for long hours.

In Luke 11: 9-10, Jesus gave us a straightforward approach to prayer. He said to ask and keep asking, to seek and keep on seeking, to knock and keep on knocking; the answers will come eventually.

Despite all the promises we have to hold on to in the scriptures, prayer makes little sense when there are no results. Prayer becomes unattractive when there are no quick results. We get the ugly nudge that God is not listening. These feelings arouse questions within us. We doubt God’s promises and goodness.

When we are quick to give up or give in, we forget it is not about what we want or how desperate, urgent, or crucial our desire is, but how God wants it to be and when he wants it to be. It is never about us.

The Father will always have his will prevail over ours. He says in Isaiah that his ways are not the same as ours, and His will is not equivalent to ours.

The Father will not bend to pressure from any praying man. When the time is right, he rises to action. He is the God who makes everything beautiful in his own time.

Persistence in prayer seems a difficult task when the answers are slow. Many believers like to serve God only when everything is exciting. They begin to doubt when things don’t go their way.

The reality we, as believers, should embrace is the intrinsic nature of good and exciting times. In a little while, the glamorous times wane off. The adrenalin that pumps in us when we receive Christ or get morale-boosting promises from his word when we win our battles without breaking a sweat doesn’t last.

In prayer, we keep ourselves going, knowing that someday, answers will come.

There is no escaping this reality for any of us. There is no getting around it. No matter who we are or what position is in Christ, if we will have to attain the fullness of what God has in store for us, we have to persist in prayer.

The Christian journey sure has exciting moments, but in between these moments, there is a great requirement for diligent perseverance. Standing firm means not fainting or losing faith. It is a steady and continuous prayer. It is a stretch, not once and for all. It is for the strong-hearted.

When we stand firm, we prove to God that we believe in His way and timing and trust him to deliver. So, we will wait.

In the book of Philippians 4:6-7, we were admonished to do away with worries and stand firm on God's promises in prayer and supplication to our maker. The subtle delay should not make us derailed away from the promise of God for our lives.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

6 Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Let us keep on knocking.

Jesus did, and so should we.
